Vocalist/guitarist Cecilia Esquivel of Cantaré!

ArtSpace Herndon is pleased to invite children and their families to a Big Read Celebration of Literature and Music featuring Cantaré! The audience will hear about a young Mexican boy named Antonio who is the lead character in the book “Bless Me Ultima” by Rudolfo Anaya. In the book, Antonio’s elder teaches him legends of his ancestors and how to develop relationships with nature by following the ‘old Mexican ways.’ Growing up with these lessons, he learns to overcome his fears.

After the discussion, Cantaré will lead the audience in an interactive Latin American musical and storytelling presentation which will provide magical explanations for subjects in the book: the origins of the first night, the first eclipse, how the turtle got its shell, how the armadillo learned to sing, and more. The audience will take part in the stories by using call and response, creating sound effects, singing and playing some instruments.
